A Noble Knight & the Magic Whisk

Watch as the young knight unleashes the power of the magic whisk upon his invisible foes!

Crash! Bang! Wallop!

The rain is coming down hard this Thursday morning, puddles forming in the grass and expand steadily. The thunder claps nearby, loud and hard, rattling the glass in the windows, so that even Atticus, normally unmoved to comment upon unseen phenomena, stops his business, forms an “O” with his mouth, “ooooh”s, and points to the window. This is an expression of wonder and not fear. He is, generally, fearless, but it’s nice that he seems unperturbed by this giant clanging. Will he sleep through such clamour, I wonder.

Later, with the rain still falling but thunder subsided, Atticus brings me one of his favorite books. The book, “Chicky Chicky Chook Chook”, is actually the first book I bought for him, purchased months before his birth, and tells the tale of three groups of animals as they play, nap, and then have their nap interrupted by a rainstorm. Atticus is an impatient listener. He knows the book, and sitting on my lap he rapidly flips the pages, eager to get to the climax of the plot: a two-page depiction of wide-eyed animals in the midst of a thunderclap. Many months ago, for added effect I began to shake the book in my hands as I hammer out the dramatic words: CRASH! BANG! WALLOP! The following page poses a heavily bolded question of behalf of the little, now very soggy, critters: What on earth was that? But the books quickly resolves itself, and Atticus’ attention is not held by the denouement. Today he leaves my lap, but sometimes he insists on an encore, and I’ll oblige, repeating the voice of the thunder with an even greater vigor. No, today he’s off to the cupboards, to the pots and pans.

The thunder outside has long since past, but there in the kitchen is a tumultuous clattering and a furious banging.

Early mornings

I realize I haven’t posted in ages. Whoops. But being a new dad is a busy venture. I began a new job in April – I’m back at the University of Saskatchewan – and I’ve been very focused on learning the ropes there.

J and I have been very successfully at creating routines for Atticus. The bedtime ritual has been pretty constant for at least six months now. Whether or not Atticus is happy to participate in this routine is another story. This will come as no surprise to parents.

This morning A was up at 4am, and gave no serious consideration to J’s repeated entreaties to go back to sleep. And so his day began. My great wife let me sleep another 3 hours and then requested a shift change, which is only fair.

So now Atticus and I are in the kitchen. I’m making baked salsa eggs and he’s chewing on a wooden spoon.

I cannot but attribute his early morning rising (and there have been a few of them this past week) to the arrival of more teeth. He’s been cranky to various degrees for weeks now – so I’m happy to see some result.

Hopefully this little boy will have a nap soon!

Fast, Furious & Frightening

Over the last few weeks, Atticus has been showing off new skills in quick succession. It all started with crawling. Now he’s pulling himself up on everything and crawling up stairs. I suppose this is a natural development, but it looks like Evel Knievel to me!

Keeping House

January flew by. We didn’t even notice the cold – but we enjoyed the chinook (or whatever) that rolled through here. I’ve been busy working on the household’s deferred maintenance – there’s a lot of it – and baby-proofing rooms.

Installing a baby gate at the top of our entrance-way stairs, between a closet and a banister, proved to be a frustrating, but ultimately successful, affair. The gate has an annoying alarm to alert you if you’ve left the gate open. We turned it off on the first night and haven’t yet turned it back on! I suppose I’d better do it, just in case.

Next on the list of things to tackle is a recaulking of the shower. The previous owners of our place did a bunch of renovations. Superficially these are very nice. Nuff said.

Here’s a pic of Lil A enjoying the bathtub before I pulled the caulking out.
